Why You Should Take Barre Teacher Training

AA0A8627Oh, hai. I’m Letta. I teach barre, but I didn’t exactly set out to be a barre teacher. In fact, I took Six Degrees’ Barre Teacher Training in order to:

  • learn more about anatomy in motion
  • key into my own body’s limitations and badassery
  • challenge myself
  • learn modifications to take my practice up or down a notch as needed
  • connect more with the teachers and community at Six Degrees

AA0A7377Check plus! I accomplished every single one of those goals in one weekend in the beautiful Pure Yoga studio in West Stillwater, MN. I also realized capabilities and connections that came as a total surprise as Cady Eddy taught me about the “anatomy trains” that connect our major muscle groups throughout the body and explained how to tap into my pelvis instead of my hip flexors. As Heather Runman talked about giving birth and reconnecting with her athletic body in new ways. As Sophia Lorraine explained her own way of bringing a yogi spirit into a barre class. As Becky Golberg taught me to find my voice in a classroom, to guide individual students into the exercises that would work best for them even as I kept a whole classroom on task, and to let my authentic personality be my guide in building my classes. As I connected with other eager students, each with their own motivations, back stories, and aspirations.

I expected to learn. I didn’t expect to transform. And I certainly didn’t expect to become a barre teacher, but as soon as we paired off to practice cuing through complex exercises, I realized I felt at home. I was happy and excited for every moment of practice teaching and I was putting playlists together in my head. As it turned out, I was a teacher all along — I just needed the knowledge and skill that Six Degrees’ master teachers shared with me in that beautiful Stillwater studio.

IMG_6833Oh, as for challenging myself? I’m proud to say that, after three individual barre classes and hours of classroom practice, my body was tired, but I was excited and satisfied. Barre Teacher Training — whether I’d ever become a barre teacher — was one of the most useful and fun weekends I’ve ever had, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. Plan to make the weekend of July 29th-31st a celebration of you, your capabilities, and your Six Degrees community. You won’t regret it!
