One of the newest and coolest summer happenings in Minneapolis is the community-driven “Open Streets Minneapolis” initiative. Originally held just at Lyn-Lake in 2011, the event now involves 6 locations across the city. It’ll come “home” to Uptown on June 8.
The website for Open Streets MPLS says, “For the past three years, streets in Minneapolis have transformed to allow residents to experience their city in a whole new way—by bike, by skateboard, however they please.”
Even on foot, using the whole of Lyndale Ave. creates a different, more intimate and leisurely approach to our community, allowing everyone to come together, stroll about, maybe do a little yoga with the Guerilla Yogis in the middle of the road, and notice buildings and businesses they’ve never slowed down enough to spot. There’s even live music from the concurrent Lyn-Lake festival, held from noon to 8pm in the parking lot behind the Jungle Theater and Fugi-Ya.
We’re looking forward to June 8th—our annual chance to see the city in from a whole different angle, meet the neighbors out and about, and remember that the streets are there for us to move!
